Ray Singh is a writer, editor, and independent researcher based in Delhi. Her work moves between cultural criticism, fiction, and literary essays, with particular interests in memory, identity, Asian cultures, and the stories people tell to make sense of themselves and the worlds they inhabit. She holds an MA in English Literary Studies from the University of Exeter and has written for publications including Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, Ricepaper Magazine, GirlUp Magazine, and Areo. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
I’m a writer, editor, and independent researcher interested in the stories people inherit, resist, and remake. I have a fairly diverse work forms that is a mixture of cultural criticism, literary essays, fiction, and long-form features. My writing both literary and fiction is informed by questions of memory, identity, belonging, and social change. With a background in literary studies and editorial practice, I enjoy drawing connections between history, culture, and everyday life, especially the quieter, more intimate ways these forces shape how we see ourselves
Outside of writing, I'm a huge fan of speculative fiction and psychological and existential horror. I'm particularly drawn to films and television that use genre to explore larger questions about identity, memory, social change, and the ways people navigate an increasingly complicated world. I’m particularly interested in Asian cultures, visual storytelling, and the emotional lives of ordinary people, the small, often overlooked details that reveal something larger.
Every project begins with curiosity.
Before I start writing, I look for the element that speaks to me most—whether it's an idea, a detail, a perspective, or a particular way of seeing a topic. Finding that point of connection is essential for me; it becomes the driving force behind the piece and shapes my approach to it. I believe that if I’m genuinely engaged with a subject, that energy carries through into the writing, making it more compelling for readers.
Whether I'm writing a film review, a travel essay, a cultural feature, or a piece of fiction, I begin by asking questions: What story is being told? Who is telling it? What histories, assumptions, and emotions sit beneath the surface?
My process combines research, close reading, interviews when appropriate, and careful attention to voice. I enjoy working with complex subjects and translating them into writing that remains accessible, engaging, and human. The goal is never simply to explain a topic, but to help readers see it differently.
